In this week’s instalment, Mr Lens plays a recording by writer Gyrus, speaking at the October Gallery in Holborn, London on 27/10/2009.

This talk is highly dense and detailed, and therefore difficult to summarise into shownotes, but the main topics include the schools of thought concerning ‘Darwinism’, whether it should be seen as a progressivist ladder in which all evolution leads to better species than before, or whether it is a tree, branching out in tangents. Also it traces the origin of the term ‘noble savage’, pointing out that in Europe, hunting was the sole privilege of the nobility, and that when colonial visitors from Europe saw tribal natives hunting, they perceived it as a cultural ‘nobility’.

Gyrus analyses the difference between how violence vs quality of life differ between Western and tribal societies, and also describes the perspective of Darwin, Hobbes, Crawford et al, as this talk looks at the anachronistic and often misguided perceptions of Victorians on so-called ‘savages’.

To check out Gyrus’s website and to buy a copy of his book ‘War and the Noble Savage’, visit www.dreamflesh.com .

After the talk, Mr Lens reads emails by Lauren and Sylvain. Lauren’s email talks about Professor David Nutt, who was fired by the UK government for speaking his mind about cannabis and government policy.
